"Soundtrack to a Coup d'État" is a 2024 documentary by Johan Grimonprez that explores the intersection of jazz, Cold War politics, and decolonization, focusing on the 1961 assassination of Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. It examines how the U.S. and Belgium used cultural diplomacy—sending jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie on African tours—as a cover for covert operations to suppress independence movements. Through archival footage and music, the film reveals the deep ties between art, colonialism, and political intrigue. Special guest: Dr. Ira Dworkin, author of the book "Congo Love Song: African American Culture and the Crisis of the Colonial State", which partially inspired the film.
